It's
really only a myth that people don't like change. We actually
love it. We do it all the time. How often do you change your
hairstyle, your music, your clothes, your mind? Change
is exciting and rejuvenating. It keeps life interesting.
Change is something that keeps us fresh. New years resolutions
usually involve changing something about our lives, often
our behaviour, like giving up smoking or doing more exercise
or making more time for family. Our desire to change is often
what improves our lives.
What we're really afraid of is change that is forced upon
us, change that we can't control. When change happens suddenly,
and we have no say over it, we have a tendency to freak out
a bit, to resist it, to want to cling on to the way things
were. We often want to claw our way back to what was familiar
and secure. Fear of change is natural, but it can be an anxiety
that holds us back and prevents us from taking new directions.
Wouldn't it be good if we could look at change - even if
we can't do anything about it - as a chance to refresh our
lives, or our way of thinking?
If you are looking for a change, here are some ideas…
You could go on an
adventure, look at volunteering
overseas, or at
home. You could get music lessons and learn to
play that instrument you always wanted to, say yes to every
question you are asked, try
out a new restaurant, invite a friend over and
cook a new dish for them. Write letters instead of email,
climb
a wall, turn your mobile phone off for a day, get
a makeover, pick up a new hobby, go a new way home from work,
pick up a course, swap a book…
In the words of my hero David Bowie, time
may change me but I can't trace time…so there's no time
like now to welcome a change, big or small, into your life.
Be fearless and see where it takes you.
