New York in the winter by Marco Sonntag

This photo has been taken by amateur photographer Marco Sonntag, who wants to make a point of not having to use the best cameras for the best photos, it's more about "the right time, at the right place, with the right eye"...

"I took it December 2000 in New York, right outside Madison Square Garden. I think I like it so much, because it was the last time that I saw heaps of snow :-)

People in NYC don't know how to drive a car as soon as there is alittle bit of snow on the road, so it was loads of fun to walk around the city and watch cars sliding around left and right. We started throwing snowballs at cars for fun. Some gangster looking chaps drove by, lowered the window and showed us their baseball bat in the car before we could throw some snowballs at them - welcome to New York :-)

I also like the fact that the image was taken with a simple 2 MegaPixel point and shoot camera (okay, a decent one from Canon), which I'm still using today! It doesn't need to be the latest gear all the time..."

I truly love this photo because it is so New York. It shows the harshness of the weather on the way the person is walking, covered from thead to toes. The thick snow hides the ugly pavement, the lights of the cars and the advertising bring the only colour to the photograph, otherwise it could be B&W. The composition, vertical is just perfect, it reminds us of the verticallity of this city, with all the high sky scrappers. I love the protagonism of the traffic lights too, crossing the photograph from left to right. It just a perfect captured moment.
