Tate, where Art is Fun
by Yuri

One of the best things (from my point of view) of the Tate Modern is the idea of having an installation that is interactive and allows for the public to get involved.. to have fun!

And there have been many of these along the short history of this museum. Whereby different artists have decided to use the space to create a playground for kids and adults - ART can be FUN - not only a way to express your ideas, beliefs, or creativity but also, to enjoy... mindlessly.

I was going to dare to say that FUN can distinguish us from the animals but, check out the monkeys, cats or puppies.. they all play together for the sake of it. But, in any case, if we don't have fun, we die. Fun is to the human being as important as any other activity: thinking, eating, loving... and the lack of it can drive to suicide, depression, sadness.

Fun is an irrational thing, from my point of view. It is a moment when we forget ourselves, we 'let loose' our inhibitions. That’s why we usually think that when someone is extremely funny, they are a bit crazy, we call them ‘nutter’ – because they don’t behave within the constrictions of reality, expectation, normality.

If you think about it.. it is mostly about our fun moments that we remember.. you don’t really think back and say: Yeah, it was great seating that day for 8 hours working in front of the computer, do you? That’s why some say we should relax and take ourselves less serious, that life is mostly about having fun. After all, 80-90 years can go very quickly!

Fun is related with laughter… fun is enjoyable, we don’t really recommend someone to do something when we know it is dead boring, or painful. Really, FUN is one of the most valuable qualities for anything: a person, a situation, a holiday, a movie,…

You can be rich, good looking, smart.. but if you are no fun, you won’t have any friends!

So, I think, going back to art.. that some smart fun-thinking artists have observed this and, taking it on board – they’ve decided to create FUN-tastic pieces to bring a moment of joy in our (sometimes) dull city lives...
